The Texas Stars split the first two games of the Central Division Finals against the Milwaukee Admirals.
In Thursday's Game One, the Stars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period when Matthew Seminoff crashed the net and poked the puck past Matt Murray. The goal marked Seminoff's second career playoff goal.
Shortly thereafter, the Admirals found themselves on the power play after Justin Hryckowian was sent to the box for slashing. Just six seconds into the man-advantage, Cal O'Reilly found the back of the net when a blast from the blue line bounced right to him off the back wall.
Just as the buzzer signifying the end of the first period was about to sound, Hryckowian shot the puck on net from a wide angle along the goal line that slipped past the body of Murray. The Stars carried a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
In the middle frame, Hryckowian scored his second of the night on the power play when Kole Lind found him on the back door for an easy tap-in. Milwaukee added seven more shots in the second but Hellberg stood tall in net. The Stars led 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The third period began with another Stars goal, this time from Matej Blumel. Blumel raced ahead to beat the defense and fired low on the stick side to beat Murray and extend the Stars lead to three.
Milwaukee got one back near the halfway point of the period after Mark Friedman scored on a shot from the point but it wouldn't be enough.
Texas skated away with the 4-2 Game One win to open the Central Division Finals. Watch the highlights here.
Game Two was Sunday night in front of nearly 6,400 fans in Cedar Park.
Milwaukee opened the scoring with just 90 seconds left in the first period when Jesse Ylonen blasted the puck past Hellberg from the left circle after a chaotic play in front led to the opportunity.
In the second period, the Stars earned a power play after Fedor Svechkov was sent off for hooking. On the man-advantage, a shot from Cameron Hughes turned into a secondary attempt from Hryckowian that bounced over to Lind who tucked it home. The goal marked Lind's 19th career playoff goal.
Just over two minutes later, Texas struck again when Hryckowian scored his fourth of the postseason when he turned and fired a puck over the shoulder of Murray to take the 2-1 lead.
The Admirals tied the game at 2-2 with just under six minutes left in the period after a play from behind the net led to the puck finding Joakim Kemell's stick.
The third period proved to be a tough test for Texas. Just over three minutes into the frame, Chase De Leo found the back of the net on a pass across the crease from Jake Lucchini to take a one-goal lead.
Two minutes later, Ylonen tallied his second of the night when Ozzy Wiesblatt found him across the zone for an easy shot that beat Hellberg.
The Admirals continued to bring the offense, adding two more to the board to make it 6-2 with just under seven minutes left.
The Stars wouldn't go down without a fight, though. At 13:30, Lind tallied his second of night when he sniped the puck past Murray, cutting the deficit to the three.
Just over a minute later, Lind completed the hat trick when he collected a rebound and shot a change-up towards Murray's net that fooled him.
The Stars put up a few more shots but it wouldn't be enough as the Admirals skated away with a 6-4 win in Game Two.
