Stars Score Four Third Period Goals to Defeat Reign

Oct 24, 2026

CEDAR PARK, Texas— The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, scored four goals in the third period Saturday to down the Ontario Reign 5-2 at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The Stars lit the lamp first for the seventh time in their first eight games. Trey Taylor let go of a shot from the left wing wall that hit the pad of Hampton Slukynsky and deflected right to Artem Shlaine who scored his second goal of the season with seven minutes left in the first period.

Ontario was awarded three power plays in the first period and Texas solved each one, as Brandon Halverson denied all 11 Reign shots.

Lane Pederson tied the game 1-1 eight minutes into the second period on a shot from the high slot that snuck past Halverson. The Stars looked to respond with three minutes left in the frame as Emil Hemming skated in all alone on a breakaway, but the puck bounced off his stick at the last moment.

The Reign earned a fifth power play six minutes into the final frame, but Mike Sgarbossa rushed down the right wing and fired a wrist shot over the blocker of Sluskynsky to put the Stars in front 2-1. Sgarbossa’s goal was Texas’ first short-handed marker of the season.

Kyle Looft snapped a shot from the right point off the pad of Slukynsky, and Connor Punnett raced in from the left point to bury the rebound for his first-career AHL goal to make it 3-1.

Ellis Rickwood spun past a Reign defender for a breakaway just a minute after Punnett’s marker. Rickwood laced a shot into the back of the net for Texas’ third goal in under five minutes.

The Reign responded quickly as Cole Guttman one-timed a feed from the point into the crease and Pederson added a second goal 46 seconds after Rickwood’s goal.

Ontario pulled Slukynsky with 4:30 left and eventually were awarded another power play, making it a 6-on-4 advantage. Shlaine tacked on an empty net goal for his second of the night to seal the win for Texas.

Halverson made 25 saves in the victory, while Slukynsky allowed four goals on 19 shots in the loss.

Texas heads out on a three-game road trip starting Oct. 31 in Chicago at Allstate Arena. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. Catch all the action on AHL TV on FloHockey.
