Stars Drop High-Scoring Affair in Manitoba

Oct 16, 2026

WINNIPEG, Manitoba-- The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, were outlasted by the Manitoba Moose in a 7-4 loss on Friday night at Canada Life Centre.

It didn’t take long for the Stars to light the lamp in Manitoba. Texas started a two-on-one rush after a Manitoba turnover and Artem Shlaine snapped a wrist shot over the glove of Domenic DiVincentiis just 3:27 into the first period. The Stars have now scored first in four of their first five games this season.

A few minutes after the first goal, the Stars earned a power play and capitalized. Shlaine slid a pass from behind the net to Dylan Hryckowian in the slot, who doubled the lead.

The Moose responded quickly in the second period as Brayden Yager picked off a Stars pass and rushed to the net. Brandon Halverson stopped the first shot, but Lucas Wahlin knocked in the rebound to cut Manitoba’s deficit in half just over three minutes into the frame.

Manitoba found the equalizer just after the midway point of the second. Wahlin skated down the left wing on a breakaway that Halverson stopped, but Nikita Chibrikov backhanded the rebound into the back of the net. Alfons Freij, during a delayed Stars penalty, fired a wrist shot over the blocker of Halverson a minute later to put the Moose in front for the first time.

The third period started with each team skating four-on four. Mike Sgarbossa entered the Manitoba zone and found Aram Minnetian in the high slot, who sent a wrist shot into the net for his first pro goal, tying the game at 3-3.

The Stars took a penalty 40 seconds later and Yager ripped a shot just under the crossbar to give the Moose a 4-3 lead. Colby Barlow added a fifth goal on a net-front scramble, and Yager tapped in a sixth goal for Manitoba before the midway point of the final stanza.

Kyle Looft used a behind-the-back pass to find Sgarbossa in the offensive zone with five minutes left, and the forward tallied his team-leading third goal of the season. Texas pulled Halverson for an extra skater, but Danny Zhilkin hit the empty net to finish the scoring.

Halverson had 21 saves in the loss, while DiVincentiis stopped 30 of 34 shots in the win.

The two teams will collide again on Sunday in Manitoba with puck drop at 2:00 p.m. Catch all the action on AHL TV on FloHockey.
