Stars Magic Number Stays at One Point to Clinch a Playoff Spot

CEDAR PARK, Texas -- The Texas Stars put together a lopsided shot count, but Aaron Dell’s 33 saves led the San Jose Barracuda to a 3-0 shutout win on Friday night in front of 6,458 in attendance at Cedar Park Center.

Texas (38-25-7-3) outshot the Barracuda, 33-19, but suffered only their third shutout loss this season. San Jose (30-24-8-3) stayed alive in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with the win. The Stars’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at one point with three games left in the regular season, all at home. Texas needs two points to lock up the Pacific Division’s third seed.

Texas and San Jose close out their season series Saturday at 7 p.m. CST at Cedar Park Center.

San Jose Captain Bryan Lerg provided the Barracuda with the game-winner and a 1-0 lead 7:38 into the first period when he snuck a backhand shot past Maxime Lagace on a loose puck in the slot.

In period two, San Jose capitalized on a power play chance 52 seconds in off Julius Bergman’s one-timer from the left circle. Nikolay Goldobin added an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation for his 19th of the season and his sixth against the Stars this year in five meetings.

Lagace suffered the loss with 16 saves for Texas.

San Jose finished 1-for-7 on the power play, and Texas was 0-for-6.

The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center. Full season, 24-game and 12-game ticket packages for the 2016-17 campaign are on sale now.  For more information, call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit TexasStars.com.
