Texas Scores Four in the Third to Drop Charlotte

CEDAR PARK, Texas -- John Muse stopped 27 shots against his former club and the Texas Stars exploded for four goals in the third to top the visiting Charlotte Checkers on Friday night in front of 4,802 at Cedar Park Center.

The Stars surrendered an early 2-0 lead on a pair of power play goals in the second. However, 16 seconds into the third period, Radek Faksa scored from the slot and the Stars (9-6-0-1) added three more in the final period to pull away.

The Stars host the Ontario Reign on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a matchup the AHL's last two Calder Cup Champions.

Texas started the scoring at 7:04 of the first period when Gemel Smith raced in from the right circle and banked home his sixth goal of the season. Julius Honka and Branden Troock netted the assists. The Stars extended their lead when Derek Hulak tipped an Esa Lindell shot in past Checkers’ goalie Drew MacIntyre at 17:17.

In the second, after consecutive penalties to create a two-man advantage, Justin Shugg cut the Checkers’ deficit in half at 7:20. Less than two minutes later, Trevor Carrick slipped one past Muse to knot the score.

After Texas wasted no time retaking control in the third off Faksa's goal, Justin Dowling finished off an odd-man rush with Jason Dickinson at 2:17 and Greg Rallo drilled a one-timer, power play goal seven minutes later to pad the lead at 5-3. Devin Shore rocketed an empty-net goal from center ice in the final seconds for his team-leading 10th of the season.

Drew MacIntyre suffered the loss with 35 saves. Jesse Blacker of the Stars appeared in his 250th career AHL game, and the win snapped a three-game skid for Texas.

The Stars finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Charlotte went 2-for-5.
