Dallas Prospect Joins Texas after Winning Swedish Elitserien Championship


CEDAR PARK, TX – The Texas Stars, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars, announced today that Dallas has assigned defenseman John Klingberg to Texas.


Klingberg, 20, just won the 2013 Le Mat Trophy as the champions of the Elitserien (SEL) with Skellefteå AIK by sweeping Luleå HF in four games. The Gothenburg, Sweden native appeared in 25 regular season games for Skellefteå, posting 13 points (1 goal, 12 assists), six penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating. He added four points (1 goal, 3 assists), eight penalty minutes and a plus-nine rating in 13 SEL playoff games en route to the championship. Klingberg was selected by Dallas in the fifth round (131st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year entry level contract with the Stars on May 16, 2011. He won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2012 IIHF Under-20 World Championship in Alberta, Canada, teaming with Texas Stars defenseman Patrik Nemeth to capture Sweden’s first WJC gold in 30 years. Klingberg also played for Sweden at the 2011 World Juniors in Buffalo, New York, losing to the United States in the bronze medal game.


The Stars begin the first round of the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday, April 26th at BMO Harris Bradley Center at 7:00 p.m. Texas will host Milwaukee for Game 3 on Wednesday, May 1st at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
