Barber spent a majority of the 2021-22 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins and also skated four games with Detroit Red Wings. With the Griffins he put up 53 points (28-25=53), where he led the team in goals and was tied for second in points. He finished the season on an AHL-best 18-game point streak. His 15 power play goals had him tied for second across the AHL. He has spent most of his time in the AHL with the Hershey Bears where he tallied 180 points (90-90=180) in 237 games. He made three appearances in the Calder Cup Playoffs with Hershey, putting up 15 points (5-10=15) in 38 postseason games. As a part of Team USA he won gold medals at the 2013 World Junior Championship and the 2012 U18 World Junior Championship. He also served as the captain for Team USA at the 2014 World Junior Championship.
