Texas Enters All-Star Break with 25-17-3-3 Record
CLEVELAND -- Radek Faksa’s two goals and Maxime Lagace’s 37 saves were the keys in leading the Texas Stars to a 3-2 road win against the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday in front of 9,657 in attendance at Quicken Loans Arena.
The win gave the Stars (25-17-3-3) a split in their two-game weekend set against the Monsters (22-16-4-3). The win was Lagace’s fifth straight and 10th overall. Faksa’s power play goal in the third period held up as the game-winner as the Stars forward now has six goals in his past 10 games.
Texas opens up a home-and-home series in San Antonio on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Faksa’s game-winner came in awkward fashion as the Stars power play took advantage of a friendly bounce. Brett Ritchie’s shot from the slot went high, but bounced off the glass and back in front of the net for Faksa to tap in to give him 15 goals this season.
Faksa also opened up the game’s scoring 11:00 into the first after forcing a turnover at the Lake Erie blue line and snapping a wrist shot past Anton Forsberg to make it 1-0 Texas.
The Monsters responded in the second on the power play when Trent Vogelhuber deflected a point shot at 7:44, but two minutes later Curtis McKenzie jabbed home a loose puck behind Forsberg for his 10th of the season when Mattias Backman’s wrist shot slipped through the Lake Erie netminder.
Daniel Zaar knotted things up again for Lake Erie in the third at 5:15 on another deflection goal to make it a 2-2 score before Faksa’s heroics. Lagace was at his best for the Stars in the third period, stopping 15 shots to lock down the Texas win. The rookie goaltender has given up just eight goals over his past five games.
Both teams tallied power play goals as Texas finished 1-for-5 and Lake Erie went 1-for-7.
