Stars Fall to Rampage 4-3 in a Shootout

Texas Returns Home to Host Rockford Saturday and Sunday

San Antonio, TX - The Texas Stars (14-16-0-2, 30 points) were defeated by the San Antonio Rampage (17-16-2-0, 36 points) 4-3 in a shootout in front of 7,867 fans at the AT&T Center on Friday night. San Antonio went three for three in the shootout, while the Stars failed to tally a shootout goal in the defeat.

San Antonio goalie Dov Grumet-Morris (6-3-0) stopped 31 of 34 in regulation and three of three in the shootout win. Texas goalie Andrew Raycroft (0-0-1) stopped 27 of 30 in regulation and failed to make a save on three shootout attempts. Stars forwards Colton Sceviour, Matt Fraser and Eric Godard each scored in regulation, as the club moved to 8-9-0-1 on the road this season. Rampage forward Tim Kennedy scored two of his team’s three power-play goals. Texas returns home on Saturday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. to host the Rockford IceHogs.

San Antonio jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:56 into the first period. Center Tim Kennedy picked up a loose puck in the Texas crease and slipped in the first goal of the night. Kennedy’s power-play goal was assisted by Bracken Kearsn and Mark Cullen. The Rampage pushed its lead to 2-0 at 14:21 of the first period after James Wright scored his third goal of the season. Defenseman Mike Vernace found Wright in the slot, who connected for a one-timer past Stars goalie Andrew Raycroft.

Colton Sceviour put Texas on the board at 2:31 of the second period. Sceviour tipped a shot by Ryan Garbutt, scoring his sixth goal of the year and pulling Texas within a goal at 2-1. Defenseman Jace Coyle picked up his first professional point by adding an assist on a goal. Texas tied the game 2-2 with a shorthanded goal by All-Star Matt Fraser. Center Travis Morin set up Fraser, who snapped his team-leading 17th tally of the year past Dov Grumet-Morris at 13:38. The Rampage countered with its third power-play goal of the game at 15:22. Kennedy scored his second goal of the night off a wrist shot from the top of the right-wing circle in the Texas zone. Kearns and defenseman Tyson Strachan each had an assist on Kennedy’s third goal of the season and a 3-2 San Antonio lead. The Stars tied the game 3-3 just 1:41 later. Ondrej Roman centered the puck from behind the Rampage net, finding forward Eric Godard. The Texas winger blasted a one-timer into the San Antonio net for his first goal of the season at 17:03.

After a scoreless third period and overtime the two teams went to a shootout. San Antonio’s Greg Rallo, A.J. Jenks and Mark Cullen each scored for the Rampage. Stars forwards Travis Morin, Colton Sceviour and Matt Fraser failed to score on their attempts as the Rampage took the shootout (3-0) and the game 4-3.

Texas returns home on Saturday, January 7 to host Rockford at 7:00 p.m. The first 2,500 fans to the game will receive a Texas Stars team calendar, compliments of A+ Federal Credit Union. Texas will close out its weekend with a 5:00 p.m. faceoff at home against Rockford with a team autograph session following the game.
