First-Period Surge Sends Barons Past Stars 4-3

Texas Takes on Abbotsford on Monday, March 19th at 7:30 p.m.

Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (27-32-2-2, 58 points) were defeated by the Oklahoma City Barons (39-17-4-4, 86 points) 4-3 in front 5,767 fans at the Cedar Park Center on Saturday night. The Barons scored three goals in the first twenty minutes of play and held on for the one-goal victory. Forwards Tanner House, Philippe Cornet and left wing Hunter Tremblay, each scored in the opening frame to lead the Barons. Oklahoma City goalie David LeNeveu (16-10-3) stopped 25 shots, taking the team’s road record to 22-8-1-2. Defenseman Dylan Yeo notched a goal and an assist on the night, while forward Ryan Martindale tallied two assists for Oklahoma City. Right wing Colton Sceviour and left wing Francis Wathier each added a goal and an assist in the Stars defeat. Texas center Travis Morin netted two assists, becoming the first player in team history to record 100 assists. Left wing Shawn Weller also scored for the Stars. Texas goalie Andrew Raycroft (9-10-1) stopped 24 shots in the loss. Texas takes on the Abbotsford Heat on Monday, March 19th at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.

The Barons started the scoring early in the first period. Center Tanner House found the back of the net off a rebound for the 1-0 lead. Defenseman Dylan Yeo and forward Ryan Martindale assisted on the play at 3:25. The Stars quickly answered with a goal from left wing Shawn Weller, tying the game 1-1. Weller tapped one in with help from defenseman Drew Schiestel and center Travis Morin at 4:41. On the play, Morin became the first player in team history to reach 100 assists. Oklahoma City took the lead again at 10:32 with a goal from left wing Philippe Cornet. Defensemen Taylor Chorney and Kirill Tulupov each provided an assist on the 2-1 tally. The Barons scored a shorthanded goal at 12:29, claiming a 3-1 lead. Chris VandeVelde set up Hunter Tremblay’s 14th goal of the season for the two-goal lead.

After a scoreless second period, Oklahoma City extended its lead to 4-1 at 3:32 of the third period. Defenseman Dylan Yeo slipped the puck past Raycroft with help from forward Ryan Martindale. Texas responded at 6:34 with a power-play goal from right wing Colton Sceviour. Sceviour’s 17th tally of the year was set up by defenseman Brad Lukowich and left wing Francis Wathier as the Stars’ dug into the Barons’ lead 4-2. The Stars scored again with 37 seconds remaining in the final frame. Left wing Francis Wathier netted his 16th goal of the year for the 4-3 final. Center Travis Morin and right wing Colton Sceviour each added an assist on the power play.

On Monday, the Stars conclude a seven-game home stand with Abbotsford at 7:30 P.M. Monday’s game is an H-E-B Night, as fans may bring non-perishable H-E-B products to the box office for a $5.00 discount on their tickets. Texas starts a three-game road trip on Friday, March 23rd at Oklahoma City at 7:00 p.m. The Stars then travel to Toronto for a 3:00 p.m. faceoff against the Marlies on Sunday, March 25th. The trip concludes on Tuesday, March 27th at 6:00 p.m. against the Lake Erie Monsters.
