Nov 16, 2014

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Jack Campbell stopped a season-high 42 shots for the Texas Stars in a 3-2 road loss on Sunday evening against the Rockford IceHogs in front of 6,390 in attendance.

Trailing 3-1 in the third, Derek Hulak tipped Travis Morin’s one-timer from the right circle with 2:02 remaining to pull Texas within one.  The Stars had one more chance to knot the game in the closing seconds after earning a power play, and a two-man advantage with extra attacker, but Justin Dowling’s shot from the point was blocked to end the game.

The loss closes a five-game road trip and a three-game weekend for the Stars (6-4-4-0), who return to Cedar Park on Friday to host San Antonio in showdown for first place in the AHL’s West Division at 7:30 p.m.

Antti Raanta earned the win for the IceHogs (11-4-0-1) after stopping 33 shots in his first appearance of the season, including a third period breakaway save on Matej Stransky of the Stars prior to Hulak’s goal.

After a scoreless first period, Rockford opened up the game’s scoring off a power play goal by Brandon Mashinter at 5:11 of the second.  Stransky responded for the Stars at 10:40, burying Gemel Smith’s crossing pass from the right circle for his first of the season.  Less than four minutes later, Garret Ross pushed Rockford in front again from the slot.

TJ Brennan added Rockford’s third goal at the halfway point of the third period from the bottom of the left circle.

Texas finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while the IceHogs went 1-for-3.
