Sceviour Posts Two Points, Wrenn Scores First AHL Goal in Texas Loss
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Colton Sceviour had a goal and an assist and rookie defenseman William Wrenn scored his first career AHL goal, but the Texas Stars came up short to the Oklahoma City Barons 3-2 Tuesday night at Cox Convention Center.
There were not many scoring chances in the opening period. Texas’ best chance came just past the halfway point of the frame when Travis Morin fired a shot off the left post. Oklahoma City then took the lead at 15:10 as, during a delayed penalty to the Stars, Philippe Cornet found defenseman Brett Clark unmarked on the back post for a tap-in goal and a 1-0 Barons lead.
Late in the second period Colton Sceviour put the Stars on the board when he redirected a Justin Dowling pass over the glove of goaltender Yann Danis at 15:59 to tie the game. The Barons answered back just 1:35 later when Randy Jones found Tanner House at the top of the crease for a redirected goal at 17:35 and a 2-1 Oklahoma City lead.
Trailing by a goal in the third period, the Stars were forced to take more chances and that left them open to the counter attack. With just under three minutes left in regulation Josh Green led a two-on-one rush after a Texas turnover and the Barons captain set up C.J. Stretch for a back door one-timer and a 3-1 lead at 17:06. The Stars pulled goalie Jack Campbell in the final two minutes and scored with 33 seconds left to draw within one. Sceviour made a fantastic diagonal cross-ice pass to William Wrenn just inside the left faceoff circle and the rookie defenseman fired the puck home for his first career AHL goal. Texas then called its timeout and, with Campbell still on the bench, made a mad dash to tie the game, only to have the Barons cling to a 3-2 win.
Yann Danis stopped 21-of-23 shots in goal for Oklahoma City and earned the win, while Jack Campbell made 22 saves on 25 shots in the loss for Texas. The Barons out-shot the Stars 25-23 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play; Texas was 0-for-5 on the man-advantage. The loss snaps the Stars’ five-game winning streak. Texas finishes the month of February with a record of 7-2-0-2 (16 points).
